Already this year the Torrington athlete has been crowned British and European champion for his age group.

Now he aims to make it a memorable treble with a shot at the world title in the USA.

This week, Edney flew to North Carolina where he will take part in the ITU World Championships in Concord.

Since returning to serious cycling and running training two years ago, Edney’s rise has been dramatic.

And he puts the progress down to the dedicated hours he spends training — with the help of his dog Barney.

“Barney does all my training sessions with me and he’s probably as fit as I am,” said the North Devon Tri member. “He’s a very slim border collie and he’s a bit of a character.”

Edney will also need to show plenty of character if he is to beat the world’s best duathletes in the Vet50 age group.

They will face a 10k run and 40k bike ride before finishing with a 5k run in the event on September 26.

Having won gold for Great Britain at the European Championships in Budapest, Edney knows a bit about the big occasion.

“You get one shot at it and you’ve got to get it right on the day,” he said.

“You put that Great Britain top on and it makes you glow.

“I know it’s not the Olympics or anything like that but it’s still a medal and you still get up on that podium.

“If you come down that tunnel with the Union Flag, it’s the stuff you dream about.”

Surprisingly his victory in Hungary in May came with a winning margin of more than two minutes.

“It was actually quite an easy race and I coasted for the second run,” said Edney, who also cycles for the North Devon Wheelers.

“It was almost a bit surreal and almost a bit too easy. I think it was because I was quite well prepared.

“It will be a bit tougher to win at the Worlds but it will be nice to have a shot at it.”

Edney finished eighth in his age group at the British Cycling Time Trial Championships in Buckinghamshire last week.

And a superb season on the bike has also seen him crowned National Road Race champion.

Braving miserable July weather, he dominated the race in Bucks after breaking away from the main field.

“It was a horrible day, chucking it down with rain and I decided the best place to be was up the front, right out of the way,” he said.

In his 20s, Edney represented Britain at cycling and he was national junior champion in 1976.

His running experience includes an impressive time of 2-37 at the London Marathon in 2002.

His wife Sally and son Harry are also keen athletes and take part in many of the same races, making it a “real family day out”.

Edney works at Johns Supermarket in Instow and cycles to and from work as part of his daily schedule.

“At the moment I’m concentrating on speed and making sure I don’t do anything silly,” he added.

“You’re watching out that cars don’t mow you down or you don’t chop your hand off with a butcher’s knife!”

Travelling and competing abroad is expensive and Edney is grateful to all those who have supported him financially.

Employers Mike and Anthony Johns have provided sponsorship while customers have made donations.

Sandra Yeo, of Instow, even held a coffee morning to raise funds.

“It’s a nice little friendly shop and a lot of the guys who come in wish me all the best,” said Edney. “They are not just customers, they are friends.”

Multisport athletes from around the world will be travelling to the Unted States for the 2009 ITU Duathlon World Championship, hosted by Cabarrus County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The event will feature close to 1,000 age group competitors – racing on a 10k run, 40k bike, 5k run course in and around Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

The location offers a one-of-a-kind venue for the World Championship, presenting a challenging course that will take the athletes around the same track where NASCAR’s greatest drivers have raced for the finish line.

Both Michael and Anthony Johns (from John’s of Instow) have kindly agreed to help with sponsorship but Simon could still do with some help towards his travelling and accommodation expences.

This year’s main regatta will be held on Sunday (August 2) with sailing races taking place on both sides of the river from around 2pm.The popular family Sand Castle Competition takes place on Instow Sands, starting at 1pm in an area that will be marked by bunting. Everyone is invited to go along and have a dig.

Also, on Instow sands at 2pm there will be children’s races. A ferry will operate between Appledore and Instow on the day.

Salmon boat races for the Championship of Torridge on Tuesday (August 4) at around 6pm. These races are open to all and for crews of up to four who fancy their chances, there will be boats available. If there are more crews than boats, heats will be arranged.

Annual Cornish Pilot Gig Challenge Sprint races at Appledore on Thursday (August 6) at 6pm. With more gigs now in the area including two each from the Appledore and Torridge clubs, and more from Clovelly, Ilfracombe and North Cornwall clubs, racing should be keen for the trophies, with classes for seniors, ladies, juniors and veterans.

The International Crabbing Competition takes place on Friday August 7 on Appledore Quay at around 6pm. This is open to teams of four children who will need to take their own buckets and bait. Also, on the same evening it is hoped the popular outboard motor races from Appledore Quay will be able to take place. These are open to all with entrance on the night.

Sailing races for gaffers and lugsail boats will be held off Appledore Quay on Saturday August 8. This is open to anyone whose boat has four sides to the sail. Racing starts at around 6pm.

Model Yacht Races take place at low water on the sand ridge near the Royal George Slip on Sunday August 9 at around 2.30pm. The model yacht racing is always popular and there will be races for all classes and ages with boats to borrow if you haven’t got one. It’s an interesting spectacle to watch and people are invited to go along and join the fun. A Sandcastle competition will also be held on the ridge at Appledore.

The regatta committee are in need of more helpers on the Instow side of the river.

On Instow seafront you have Breakers, a lovey old fishermans cottage, very tastfully renovated by the current owners.

Lisa and Jane Tallett have made a huge dent in the removal of the general flotsam that has been washed up on Instow beach.

It has been deposited at the B and B in preparation for the latest artwork projects.

These include mobiles, mirrors and picture frames all embellished with the flotsam from Instow beach.

So it was onto the trailer for Limpy and a return to base command…… however no one had thought about the years of neglect and lack of grease that the trailer had had, and the unusual route that Comander Tim intended to take…..

So I suppose that it should have been no supprise that when comander Tim decided to take the long way round, and put the trailer through its paces that,…… wait for it, ……yep BOTH the wheels fell off !
